Admission Essays Hints: Introducing Yourself

A common question for admission essays is for the candidate to introduce himself or herself to the admission board. This is often a tasking challenge because a student might not know what exactly to write and what to leave out. This is because a student wants to leave a positive lasting impression that would influence the admission board's decision. A person might also be tempted to write a lot of things about themselves and in the process someone might disclose information that might end up working against the intention of the applicant. When it comes to writing about oneself a student could consider the following.

The reason why you are writing

Whenever someone is asked to introduce themselves the person needs to keep in mind the reason as to why they are making the application. In that regard the student will be able to select only the relevant information. For example if the student is making an application for admission into a college then the student ought to focus on how his or her life experiences relate to getting into that particular learning institution and how their experiences have prepared the person for the college experience. The aim is to make the reader want to get to meet and know you as the writer.

Write in the first person

Since the application essay is about the student or the applicant the applicant should therefore ensure that they write the application in the first person. The applicant should always refer to themselves and their experiences and credentials and how they relate to the position being sought. This would involve highlighting the factors that make the applicant unique and causes him or her to stand out from all the other applicants.

Be interesting

When writing about him or her, a student applicant should be as interesting as possible right from the opening paragraph to throughout the body and conclusion of the essay. In the opening paragraph for instance, instead of just telling the reader one's name, the applicant should do so in a manner that expounds in detail about who the person is. In the body of the essay the applicant should highlight on his or her relevant personal experiences and should not be shy to emphasize the areas that make them stand out. One should not only talk about their experiences but also what their professional goals and aspirations are so and how getting into that particular institution would help them realize that objective.
